Universal design in vienna

Between 08.07- 22.07.2006, I attended a BEST (Board of European Students of Technology) summer course held in Vienna Technical University themed as "Architecture For All- Universal Design". The course aimed to orient and experimentate urban life through the eyes of handicapped people. Besides the very amusing spirit of Best courses and lectures from professors of Vienna Technical University, we used wheelchairs throughout the city, trying to get on the train, going to Museum Quartier, and so on.

Between Borneo-Sporenburg and Sluseholmen

Two identical housing patterns by Soeters; one in Eastern Harbour District in Amsterdam (1992-2003) and one in Sluseholmen in Copenhagen (2005-2009) Guess which?

Temppeliaukio Church

Temppeliaukio Church designed by architects Timo & Tuomo Suomalainen (1969) This poetic church; very much in human scale with an inspiring and experimental use of natural materials is in Helsinki. Surprisingly excavated in rocks, it performs an excellent acoustics with its copper dome and natural rough rocks behind the altar wall. From the ground floor, there is a flattened panoramic view restricted by glass and darkness of the walls but when one enters the altar or goes upstairs, the only natural light that comes from the glazed copper dome makes it a different kind of experience. The only natural light in winter Panoramic view from the entrance views from the hypnotizing copper dome views from the entrance; winter afternoon
